30 Day Genderqueer Challenge Day 6

When did you realize you were Genderqueer?

I knew I didn’t identify with the term ‘trans*’ a few years ago, maybe 4-5 years, but I wasn’t aware of the term ‘genderqueer’ until a little later, maybe 2-3 years ago. Funnily enough it was around the same time Genderqueer Australia started up and a little before I contributed my story to a book of short stories.

I don’t remember a defining moment as such but I am sure it is there amongst my written journal entries, scraps of paper and diary entries. I think I realized I was genderqueer by recognition – I heared the term and found out what it meant and thought “Ah ha so that’s what I am!”. Just before I eneded my previous relationship I was already exploring my gender queerness through books, websites and playing with drag and binding, but who knows when I first learned that word.
